About the Route
The Ohechi is the coastal route of the Kumano Kodo, skirting the dramatic shoreline of the Kii Peninsula as it winds from Tanabe southward around the cape and eastward to Nachi Taisha, home of Japan's tallest waterfall. Unlike the Nakahechi, which attracted imperial pilgrims, the Ohechi was the road of ordinary people — fishermen, merchants, and common devotees who traveled the sea road to Kumano when the mountain routes were too arduous. The path passes sea cliffs where the Pacific crashes against ancient rock, tiny fishing harbors unchanged in centuries, and remote headland shrines where the boundary between the human world and the divine feels conspicuously thin. The Ohechi is the least visited of all Kumano routes, which means the pilgrim who walks it today carries the rarest gift the Kumano can offer: genuine solitude in a sacred landscape.
